‘Made in Britain’ is the hottest label in fashion according to the Telegraph.
www.telegraph.co.uk
‘People are getting fussier about where their clothes are made; buying British is an awareness that, like slow food and Fairtrade, will grow.’
Caryn Franklin, the fashion writer and broadcaster, also sees a shift. ‘For a long time, people were getting excited about binge-buying cheap clothes made on the other side of the world, but fast-fashion fatigue is setting in,’ she says. ‘We're starting to remember that Britain once had a booming textiles industry, with some of the most skilled craftsmen in the world. Although to a lesser degree than 20 years ago, that quality is still out there and it is rekindling our love affair with clothes that are British-made.’

‘This is not just a fabric, but a national heritage item – so-named because of the ‘swish-swish’ of the fabric as it is worn in traditional dress. Nelson Mandela is rarely seen without his famous shweshwe shirts ... The company that produces the fabric is 45% owned by the workers themselves, thus empowering the local workforce with a sustainable future in the Eastern Cape.’

Quail launches retail website. The long anticipated launch of Quail (By Mail) LLP’s retail website started trading today, specialising in ethical, fairtrade and organic ladies fashion. All items, with the exception of the Kate Sheridan handbags and purses, were designed by, or for, Quail exclusively. Located in the traditional south Devon fishing port of Brixham, Quail wants to see rural manufacturing and traditional skills revitalised in this country. As such, Quail’s clothing is produced on a small scale, by hand, in Devon. The husband and wife partnership hopes to expand its range of products over the coming months.
“We believe in creating beautifully crafted clothing. We are sure shoppers will notice details that are often missing from the High Street. Pleats and pockets plus a good sense of pattern and colour feature heavily in our designs. Ethical is a buzzword at the moment at events such as London Fashion Week, but Quail is a brand that simply wants to develop a sustainable fashion choice for the consumer.”
